Barbados Startup Converts Seaweed into Renewable Energy

Updated: Feb 20

In September 2024, Barbados-based startup Rum & Sargassum unveiled a groundbreaking prototype that transforms sargassum seaweed into biogas, offering a sustainable energy solution for the island. Founded by mechanical engineer Dr. Legena Henry in 2021, the company addresses the dual challenges of sargassum overgrowth on Caribbean shores and the need for renewable energy sources. By combining sargassum with rum production wastewater and manure from Barbados Blackbelly sheep, Rum & Sargassum produces biogas capable of powering generators and retrofitted vehicles. This innovation not only mitigates environmental issues but also contributes to Barbados's goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.
